The impressive lapidary on the outer wall of the upper castle is a sign of the history of the castle which can be traced back to the times of the Romans.
In the 12th century the Salzburg Archbishop had the castle built. From 1219 the Bishops of Seckau expanded the facilities. Over the centuries, the castle developed into a commercial and economical driving force in the region.
In the mid-50s of the previous century the alterations into an ecclesiastic house of education and recreational centre, took place. The former agricultural buildings and the stables became Seminar rooms and Guest rooms. In the early 90s the first real construction in the direction of a modern Congress and Conference centre began. The demands and standards of the 21st century are fulfilled in the stylish Hotel area that harmonises with the contemporary Congress and Convention centre. The reconstruction was completed in 2002.
